Three Life Sentences

I think he must be the husband.
HeÕs going out, shopping or something.
He walks over to her, to say goodbye.
SheÕs reading, doesnÕt look up,
licks her thumb to turn the page.
He walks away, hesitates,
turns and comes back.
He says goodbye again.
She doesnÕt look up.
HeÕd hit her if he could.
I should call out, say goodbye to me.
I donÕt, decorum wouldnÕt permit.
But my heart says it anyway.
